COMMITTEE
NEWS
House
- Phylis Brown
We had three
events over the three days of the past weekend. They were all run
by lots of volunteer help which we all greatly appreciate. I also
want to thank the staff for their help . They all did a great job
throughout the weekend, not only performing their regular duties
but pleasantly pitching in wherever else they could help.
If you have
not picked up your decals for your automobiles and boats please
do so as soon as possible.
Kim and Ezzy
have renewed their contract with the club. Please join us for
lunch Tuesday-Saturday, dinner on Tuesday and Friday evenings
and brunch on Sunday. Remember the kitchen welcomes your suggestions.
Rolex
Regatta - Ruth Miller
ROLEX 2003
- 30th Anniversary Celebration
Plans are
well underway for the extravaganza known as the 30th Annual
Rolex International Regatta, to be held at STYC March 28-30,
2003. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT
EASTER WEEKEND ! Easter falls too late in 2003, so
we kept last year's dates, and will hope for better winds!
Among the biggest
new developments is that we will be having all of the Regatta activities
on site, including the Final Awards Presentation. We are making
this possible by erecting a large tent to cover two of our tennis
courts, which will become a Regatta "Village". We are
working on a parking and shuttle plan to ease congestion around
the Club and to the Village.
Along with bars,
stand-up cocktail tables and dancing under the Tent, will be a permanent
bandstand, from which we will not only hear music to move to, but
we will also be having daily prize-giving, as well as our Final
Awards. In this way, all crew members, all sailors, all friends
and supporters, can be there for the big watch awards as well as
to party every day. And, we will have a great venue to showcase
our principal sponsor, Rolex, as well as our other supporters.
In addition
to Kim and Ezzy's great feeds on the patio throughout the event,
we are working with a number of local restaurants to provide food
booths on the final awards night, to create a "Taste of St.
Thomas" for all to enjoy. These would also be located out in
the Regatta Village.
On the supporters
front, we have commitments from Cruzan Rum and from the Ritz Carlton
Club St. Thomas, to each provide the awards for daily prizes: Ritz
Carlton Club on Friday and Cruzan on Saturday. Even if the sailors
do well on only one of the race days and miss out on the coveted
watch, they can still take home a great memory from Rolex 2003.
Further, the Ritz Carlton Club will be hosting an elegant Owner's
Cocktail Party, as another special treat to our racers.
Finally, Jim
DeWitt, famed sail racing artist, has provided a design for our
anniversary T-shirts, and we hope to have them on sale for the holiday
season.
AND THAT'S
JUST THE PARTIES AND THE EXTRAS!!!
To ensure another
stellar racing event, we are welcoming back PRO Peter "Luigi"
Reggio, who will be freshly returned from running the Louis Vuitton
Cup. He and his gang will set out and administer true championship
racing, in some of the best waters in the world. Also, we are busily
at work creating a scoring and website program to do virtually instant
results, that can be accessed and published to the world before
the racers hit the docks.
Mark your calendars
now, as the weekend is shaping up to have something for everyone
-- great racing, great food, great parties -- even fun kids
activities. And if just coming to participate is not enough,
please contact Ruth Miller 774-3883 or ruthmiller@islands.vi
to say you want to volunteer. We have plenty of places to put
you to work! See you in March!!
Race
- John Haracivet
Pillsbury
Sound Race - Mark your calendar for the November 10th,
Pillsbury Sound Race. The race starts @ 10:00 am with a pursuit
start for non-spinnaker boats. Start times for spinnaker and IC-24
boats will be announced. More fun scheduled after the race with
beach barbecue, tall tales and the band "Two Blue Shoes".
Registration will be Friday November 8th, 6:30 pm at the club.
If you know
of anyone who might be interested, please pass this race info along.
Fleet
- Jim Jamison
Just a reminder
for dinghy owners... Please place the STYC decal on the inside
transom in a highly visible location. We will begin enforcement
soon. Members who have dinghies stored on the dock will need a
decal as well.
We need help!
We would like to revamp the dock and need volunteers to help. We
would like to turn the dock boards over and replace all the bad
ones. With a crew of approx. eight to ten, we could complete this
work in a weekend. Volunteers should contact Terry at 775-6320 or
email STYC@islands.vi. We would like to have this completed by the
end of November. Any volunteers?
Junior
Sailing - Amy Taylor
The turn out
at the Junior Sailing Program Open House last September, was a huge
success. We promoted the program in the schools at the same time
as all the other after school activities, so we were not overlooked.
Thanks to the many volunteers that evening, including; The Parent's
of Junior Sailing, all the sailing instructors, and guest speaker
John Holmberg, we registered a final count of 52 enthusiastic sailors!
Special Thanks
to Carroll Rourke, for organizing the Junior Sailing Fiesta Fun
Night Fundraiser. Some of the funds raised, went towards the purchasing
of parts, for the Water Trampoline, so generously donated by Joe
Campaign. Also, thanks to all the Parents of Junior Sailing and
friends, for supporting our program.
The Halloween
Fun Night and 1st Annual Bizare Bizz`aar brought in a total of $1625.00
for Junior Sailing.

We are pleased
to announce that Jennifer and Meaghan Firestone will be
Co-Directors of the Women's
Laser Regatta scheduled for May 16-18, 2003.

A huge Thank
You to all who helped with both Jr. Sailing fundraiser events this
Fall. The September 27th fundraiser brought in $1775.00. We also
acquired a commercial grade water trampoline, thanks to Joe Campaign
of Caribbean Water Sports. Joe donated the canvas trampoline and
purchased at cost, the springs and stand.
Another HUGE
THANKS to Offshore Marine. Sue and Abuse Killers gave us huge discounts
in preparing the dinghy engine and also assembly of the water trampoline.
A special THANKS
to Loraine Houston for her assistance on September 27th. Loraine
graciously prepared all the food for the Sept. fundraising event
for the past several years.
The Halloween fund
raiser Fun Night was equally successful! We'll announce the funds
raised later. Thanks to all that volunteered.
Please mark
your calendars for Friday, December 20th.
We will be having annual STYC Christmas Party.
Santa will be here to visit all children.
Finance
and Insurance - Tammy Waters
I want to thank
those members whom have already submitted payment for their dues
or mooring fees. If you have not sent a payment, please do so to
avoid late fees and postings. Remember, you can put these on a credit
card and get miles!
From
the Kitchen - Kim & Ezzy McCoy
Just want to
thank everyone for their support. One thing we would like is
some feedback from the members. We are interested in how we
improve our menu, what
we could do to enhance our overall service and so on.
We want to remind
everyone that the "Club" has one of the most affordable
and diverse lunch menus on the "Island." The service is
great, food is consistently of high quality and value, and we can
create specials for any group who gives us advanced notice. So...
whenever you're thinking about taking clients, customers, or friends
to lunch... the St. Thomas Yacht Club offers a beautiful and serene
beach background and great value for you and your guests. You just
can't go wrong.

October really
flew by didn't it. November will come and go just as quickly,
I'm sure. Thanksgiving and the Christmas Holidays will be here
before we know it. Then the year 2003 ! Hmmm, It seems like
we just celebrated the Millennium.
Our thanks to
Brian and Carroll Rourke for their efforts in regards to the Halloween
Fun Night. Brian and his crew did an excellent job of putting up
and taking down the haunted house.
Just a reminder
for everyone who has their STYC decals... Please place your decal
on the starboard, aft bumper of your car.
Club Notes-
Good Luck to Betsy Corvene who is running in the New York Marathon.
You go girl !
John Foster
has put a team together for the Central American & Caribbean
Games. Racing in the J-24 class, the team consists of Skipper John
Foster, Tom Kozyn, Augusto Tromben, Phil Shannon and Tim Smith.
Thanks to the help of Nick Castrucio's daughter Ceyce in St. Croix
and the Yacht Club Ceyce's J-24 is being used by the team for training
every night after work and on the weekends. Several IC 24s have
volunteered to assist the team in a mini America's Cup racing format
at the Yacht Club over the next few weekends before the team heads
for Vale de Bravo in Mexico on the 19th of November. They will be
wearing St. Thomas Yacht Club shirts. Good Luck Guys !!!
