rolex on the water volunteers

Posted by canfield in Untagged

The 39th International Rolex Regatta is just around the corner to be sailed March 23rd - 25th, 2012. This year, due to last year's excellent event and press coverage we are expecting to have a very prestigious group of boats involved in the regatta and it should prove to be the biggest and best ever. We have an excellent group of supporters that help make this event possible including our title sponsor, Rolex and of course local companies including AH Riise, Bellows, Yacht Haven Grande, VI Dept of Tourism, Choice Wireless, VI Now, Innovative, Crowley and others. The real heart of the this regatta is the volunteers from the Club and community that make it all possible and have it run smoothly year after year. I'm hoping this email will help get my committees formed and doing the necessary planning for a great success.
The first need is those willing to help out on the Race Committee - This involves being out on the water for three days in the middle of the action working with our professional race officers, Dick Neville and Dave Brennan. There are all sorts of jobs from raising flags, blowing horns, taking finishes, moving buoys, driving boats etc. Experience is not necessary as we do training and their are plenty involved who know what they are doing. I am available to field questions on this activity and we need to find almost 20 volunteers willing to help out on the water.
The other area that help is needed right now is a few Committee Heads (that's right positions of real power).
I need:  Volunteer Coordinator: help organize the volunteers and make sure they gets shirts, hats, lunch, training etc.
VIP Coordinator - herd up the VIP's and press and make sure they get on the right boat each morning.
Parking Supervisor - Help coordinate our parking lot and road down to the club (talk about real power! decide who gets to park and who does not!)
I will be writing another letter (plea) in a week looking for shore side help but for right now I would like to concentrate on the water side of the event and my unfilled committee heads.
We, of course, also need boats of all sizes and shapes to help out on the water in any number of capacities. Almost anything that has an engine has some use in this event from. setting marks, transporting nurses to helping out with lunches.
GET INVOLVED IN THE ROLEX- GET YOUR FRIENDS INVOLVED
It helps the Club, it is a learning experience and its FUN!
Be apart of one of the best run regattas anywhere - Join the Team!
Please let me know if you can volunteer yourselves, boats or friends.
I'm available to answer any questions about things Rolex Regatta.
340 626 0239 or canfieldvi@gmail.com
If you have a boat get registered early!
Thanks for volunteering

Hi all and a happy holidays,

Exciting news from the sailing front as Cy Thompson is the first VI sailor to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in Weymouth, England. After a great showing in Perth at the World Championships Cy now has a guaranteed spot in the Laser class for the Games. Cy will be based in Miami for the next few months practicing and then off to Europe for more training leading up to the Olympics in August. We also have teams in the Star, laser radial and 49er hoping to qualify this summer at the final qualifying events.

Don't forget Santa this Friday night at Happy Hour.Drop your presents off in the office both wrapped and with your child's name and age on a tag. Great opportunity for photos and Santa is ready to wish all a Merry Christmas!

Christmas Day = Christmas Cove Party for STYC. Bring your food and drink to share and we will get you across the pond. First boats will be heading over about 11:30 am. Club will be closed except for launch service and ice.

Next race is the Old Trophy Race on Sunday the 8th. THIS IS FOR ALL BOATS AND IS A PURSUIT RACE.  You can fly a chute but the penalties are larger than normal. Paul Stoeken has his IC 24's for charter at just $100 for this race. Perfect Time for you cruisers to jump in on this non competitive sail around the James Islands with your bigger boats. Invite your friends and go for a sail.
The club will be serving food after the race so plan a day at the Club.

Get those reservations in for New Years Eve - Ched needs to know asap who is coming!

It is a great time of the year to use the Club - Lot's going on on all fronts!

Hi all,
Well its the season and we are extremely busy at STYC.

Before I dazzle you with all the action scheduled over the next few weeks I want to thank all those who volunteered to help out with the Carlos Aguilar Match Race and to those who took the time to come out and watch the action. I know it is hard for our locals to believe but this is one of the best match races run anywhere in the world and our venue, Charlotte Amalie harbor, is one of the most wonderful there is anywhere. I also need to thank our presenting sponsor's Trident Jewels and Time and Ulysse Nardin. Even through our tough times Satish has stayed very loyal to this event and his efforts and comittment are appreciated. Congratulations to Taylor Canfield 3rd place, Tyler Rice 6th and Nikki Barnes 11th and also to the seven members of the Antilles Sailing team who were able to crew on the boats. I have to believe very few clubs can offer opportunity to junior members the way STYC does on a regular basis.
Our Christmas tree is up and shining with a special thanks to Cuffy and Al our launch drivers who do all the decorating. This is probably a good chance to ask all who are helped by our staff during the year to remember these two and Derrick our Saturday driver when you are thinking of Christmas gifts. They work hard and keep the club looking good all year for your enjoyment.
Well he we go with our Holiday Social schedule so get out your calenders to mark these dates:

Sunday December 11 - The St James Island Race - This one kicks off our racing season and is open to all boats over 20ft.

Sunday December 18 - The Oyster Shucker Special Race - A short island race open to all boats over 20 ft and after the race join us for  Fresh Oyster Shucking on STYC Beach!  3:00 to 6:00.
Please phone in to reserve your oysters! 775 6320!

Friday December 23 - Happy Hour Kids Christmas Party - Santa will be here handing out presents and good cheer! All parents should bring a wraped present with your child's name on it to be distributed by Santa himself.

Hi all,
Busy times are happening at STYC so start saving the dates on your calender so you enjoy all that goes on at the club!
Congratulations to Ian Barrows and Alec Taylor who finished 2nd and 10th at the recent High School single-handed US Nationals held in Chicago. STYC has two in the top 10 - not bad!
Modern Saute / The Galley will be doing their usually Thanksgiving Feast on the 24th of November at STYC so make sure you get your reservations in as soon as possible. Certainly no need to cook and clean up, let us do it. All this and football too!
Wednesday nights remain popular with our new Tapa Menu and we continue to serve excellent food on Tuesday's and Friday's for dinner.
The 4th Annual Carlos Aguilar Match Race will be sailed on the waterfront Dec1 - 4, 2011. We have 14 teams coming from all over the world and a fantastic group of international umpires to call the action. Stands are set up on the waterfront as are tents so there is really no excuse not to stop by each day and especially on Saturday and Sunday for the finals. Local skipper Taylor Canfield, Sally Barkow (USA) and Stefan Lindberg (Finland) are the high seeds but we expect very exciting sailing with our brand new racing format. Check out the carlosmatchrace.com website for more info.
We had great response from those that offered housing for the competitors but we need at least one car or truck to help chauffeur all the competitors around. If you have an old vehicle in your driveway it would be very helpful if we could borrow it for a few days.  contact bill at stycisv.com
We also need quite a bit of help to get the boats ready for Carlos event this Saturday. If you are handy around boats please stop by. Will have a cooler of beer etc. We also need some artistic folks with clean hands to help put decals on sails and boat hulls. Lots of this work will be done in side the building. please stop by and help out on boats are the graphics. your help will be much appreciated.
On Sunday the 27th we will be sailing all the boats down to Yacht Haven Grand for the event. We will make a fun race out of it so even if you are not on a crew stop by and I'm sure we will get you on a boat for a beautiful spinnaker run to town. Race will start about noon. Have some fun and help out the event!
With Christmas on a Sunday looks we will have our annual visit from Santa Claus and Kid's Christmas Party on the 16th of December at Happy Hour. As always bring a present for your children and it will be delivered to them by Santa as they sit on his lap.
Ask anyone who is around on Christmas and you will be told the only place to spend Christmas Day is at our Christmas Cove Raft Up. This year will be know exception. Don't need your own boat just bring some food and drink and we will get you to the party. Noon until - don't miss it!
The Old Trophies Race, another tradition will be sailed on the 8th of Jan. This is a pursuit race 3 times around the James' - bring your old trophies. Winner gets last pick.
See you at the Club!
If any of our new members have any questions about the club, our events or need other information please feel free to contact me anytime at stycisv@gmail.com

update 11/4

Posted by canfield in Untagged

Hi all,
All is going well at STYC. We have a new menu and the Wednesday Tapa Night is a great success.
As always Halloween was a scary affair with a terrifying haunted house put on by Ched and Modern Saute
The Carlos Aguilar Match Race is coming up Nov 27 - Dec 5 and we still need some housing for our competitors and judges. If you can help out and have not contacted myself <stycisv@gmail.com> or "Denise Holmberg" <dbholmberg@gmail.com>, please do so as soon as possible. Great event and if you help with housing you get invited to all the parties.
Last year's International Rolex Regatta shirts were so popular we did a run just for the Annapolis boat show with a 2012 date on them to help hype the event up North. We now have a number of these shirts on sale at STYC. Get your Christmas presents early and be done. We will be offering quite a bit of other Rolex Regatta merchandise just before Christmas. Long Sleeve Performance Tees for $30 and Short sleeve Performance Tees $25. They will not last long and will be your last chance to get this great design.
Don't forget the Annual Club Meeting This Wednesday at 6 PM open to all members. Here all the reports and find out who the hard working individuals are that keep your club running full steam a head!

aug 17 update

Posted by canfield in Untagged

Hi all,
The folks at the The Galley our bar and restaurant will be closing from Sept 14th a Wednesday and be reopening on Friday Sept 30 for Dinner. Doing that period no food will be served at the club and the bar will be opened on a limited basis.
We will entertain ideas for fund raisers on the two happy hours Fridays Sept 16 and 23 when no food will be served if parents of junior sailors or the HS team wanted to do pot lucks or simple dinners on those evenings. Nice opportunity to raise a few $'s and the bar will be open.
On the Saturdays and Sundays when junior sailing classes are being taught we will have a grill going for "bring your own and cook your own dogs, burgers, etc"
On most days we will be operating an extremely simple honor bar with limited product.
This is our quietest time of the year and we believe this will not effect our membership in many ways.
Thank you for your patience doing this time period.

Posted by canfield in Untagged

Hi all,

Although it is very quiet in the summer we have some great things going on at the Club.
Currently I have about 12 on the deck eating a great lunch and there are two full tables playing Mahjong. Plenty of Summer action.
On the 9th of August we will be having a small reception for Bill Evans, one of our founding members, whose family donated the land on which the clubhouse now stands. Bill is returning to the island for a visit for the first time in a few years and we thought it would be nice to gather his old friends and also any new members who might enjoy meeting Bill. Should be a fun evening with lots of old stories about STYC. Thanks to John Foster and Ray Miles for this idea.
To our tennis players:
Dave Giza is now also offering a free clinic for beginners, same time as George's.  Maybe someone is interested in learning.
Attention Tennis Players:
Tennis lessons for groups or individuals are offered by:
George Lewis
Weekdays 4:30PM until
Saturday and Sundays
Call George at 690 5680
David Giza
Weekdays 8AM until 4:30PM
Call Dave 643 8087
Both tennis pros are offering free clinics to members each Saturday at 9:30AM
George is teaching advanced players
David is teaching beginners and intermediate.
Come on out and join the tennis fun.
Starting in mid October The Galley will be expanding our food service to include a Wednesday Night Tapas and Wine Party Happy Hour.
Plenty more info on this in future weeks but it will be a great addition to our existing food service.
Friday night racing will continue for the next few weeks so come out and jump on a boat this Friday.
One more week of our very successful and very full summer camp. Info on junior sailing classes will be going out soon and it will kick off in early September. Don't hesitate to get signed up as both space and classes are limited.
If you are notreceiving info about classes dent your email to stycsailing@gmail.com and you will be put on the distribution list.
See you at the Club!

June 5 report from manager

Posted by canfield in Untagged

Hi all,

Wow what strange weather. We can't get a sailing race off to for anything. Lots of action expected next Friday night as the wind gods promise some breeze. Don't give up as it will happen.
Next Sunday we have rescheduled the Carnival Race right before the Lobster and Clam Bake

Please get your reservations in for the Lobster / Clam Bake (with Pig) and the usual fixings next Sunday. Reservations close this weekend as the food has to be ordered off island. Should be a great party with live music and hopefully keg beer.
Looks like the summer camp is already filled up which is a great sign for a healthy Club. Lots of youth and activities is a good thing.

Scotiabank International Optimist Regatta is just around the corner Jun 23 - 26. We still need some Race Committee volunteers and a housing spot or two.
Please contact Bill Canfield if you can help out canfieldvi@gmail.com 340 626 0239.

Ched is working on some exciting lunch specials for the summer - more soon.

Wow our College age sailors are really smoking!! At the recent College Sailing Nationals Mimi Roller, Cy Thompson and Taylor Canfield were all named All American and Taylor and Cy were finalists for College Sailor of the Year. Led by Cy, Roger Williams U won the Team Racing Championship besting Taylor's Boston College squad in the final race. Boston College came back winning the Co Ed Championship Fleet Racing with Taylor dominating the B division and having the lowest scores in the event . Roger Williams finished 6th.  Boston College was also named best overall team in college sailing for the 2nd straight year winning the Fowles Trophy. In the recent Wilson Trophy sailed in England (considered by most the world championship of team racing) Thomas Barrows sailing with a two other Yale grads and crews finished in 1st place.

It should also be noted that both Cy and Mimi have qualified to represent the Virgin Islands at this summer's Pan American Games in Laser and Laser Radial.
Our sailors will be competing all over the world this summer and I'm sure more impressive results will follow.

GO STYC SAILING!!! All good stuff.

See you at the club.

Bill
